India has received its first installation of the GEPS system

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – May 17, 2017 – Exlterra’s patented groundwater recharge device known as GEPS (Energy-passive Groundwater Recharge Product) has been installed at SMART EcoPark, an interactive learning space in Mumbai, India. The system has been engineered to work with the surrounding environment to increase water penetration, thus beginning a new fight to save India’s dwindling aquifers.

Groundwater is the most common source of freshwater in India, but mainly due to population growth and over-extraction, this source of potable water has dwindled over the years. Groundwater is mainly recharged by the heavy rains which occur during the monsoon season; typically lasting 4 months out of the year. It is thus critical to maximize stormwater infiltration in a short period of time. Exlterra’s Energy-passive Groundwater Recharge Product is made to do exactly that.

The GEPS system is designed to recharge and retain groundwater by accelerating infiltration and balancing soil moisture. During the monsoon season, the system will reduce surface flooding (and the damage caused by it) in addition to retaining groundwater and recharging India’s diminishing aquifers. Because GEPS is planted underground and does not require maintenance, it works continuously without human interaction. All this combined makes the GEPS system the best possible solution for India’s main water challenge and a perfect match for the SMART EcoPark’s mission.
